It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? and Bargain Book Bonanza!

If you check my Kindle I am currently reading Last Exit In New Jersey by C.E. Grundler. I am also constantly checking out The Productive Writer by Sage Cohen, and Ready, Aim, Specialize! by Kelly James-Enger.

If you look carefully at The Kindle photo above, you will see three books with “New” next to them! This brings me to:

Bargain Book Bonanza 05/30/11!

I was at BookExpo America and the Book Bloggers Convention last week. Publishers and authors were handing out advanced reading copies of upcoming book titles, many of which are slated to be published this summer and fall.

In other words, FREE books. The photo above includes many of the books I got last week – for FREE!

Some of these books I will probably review, and others I’ll just enjoy reading for myself!

I will be posting later this week about the two conventions!

Bargain Book Bonanza April 11th

Somehow, despite having a Kindle and giving many of my books to charity, print books keep wandering back into my apartment. It’s because I live in an area that is book OBSESSED. In the spring there are many used book sales, where folks line up before the doors are opened for the day!

I have promised myself that I will improve my artistic skills, so I went to the latest sale to buy some art books. Not art history books, but instructional books. I bought the beautiful hardcover book above How to Paint and Draw by Hazel Harrison, and also two of Betty Edwards’ classic instructional books:

Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain is the best-selling drawing instruction book in history.

I also bought two books to read about my New Jersey obsession:

The Pine Barrens by John McPhee — classic even if dated:

I also bought New Jersey: A Photographic Journey with gorgeous photography by Walter Choroszewski and text by John Cunningham. All for exactly $20.00. Please join the Bargain Book Bonanza every Monday at Baja Greenawalt!

Monday is the Bargain Book Bonanza Linky Party at Baja Greeawalt’s Cozy Book Nook!

Last week I went to a local church’s thrift shop and snapped up a copy of Bharati Mukherjee’s The Middleman and Other Stories for 25 cents. This short story collection contains her masterpiece “The Management of Grief“, which I’d read and admired before. I’m now reading the other stories. The book is slim enough to fit in my purse!

I’m also scoring FREE classics to download on my Kindle! Most novels written before 1923 are free! So far I’ve downloaded Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, and Huckleberry Finn.

#1 Bargain Book Bonanza Linky Party!

Bargain Book Bonanza

Baja Greenawalt’s Cozy Book Nook is hosting a new linky party! It’s called the Bargain Book Bonanza and it’s all about books that we score on sale!

I’m lucky to live in an area where there are many great book sales where I can score cheap books. Most of these sales occur in May, but one of my favorite sales will be held in April. The book sale lasts for several days, and on the last day you can buy a whole bag of books for $5.00!

I also like to go to the local library where they have books for sale on racks near the front door. One day I was very poor and was scrounging around in my purse to find some change to pay for some of these books. I didn’t have enough money for food, but books always come first. Priorities are important. The librarian took pity on me and let me have the books for free!
