Literary Lions and New York Public Library Turn 100!

The two beloved literary lions, Patience and Fortitude, who guard the magnificent New York Public Library, are iconic figures in New York City.

The photo at the top of this post are Patience and Fortitude in the snow during a winter storm in 1948. I love them! Anyway, the lions (and the library) are celebrating their 100th birthday this weekend!

The library has celebrated by having lions — made of Lego bricks! — on display (at least for this weekend). See the video below (you might have to keep clicking it since it seems to buffer a great deal):

I heart these lion bookends. I hope some day to have them:

If you love these bookends, you can purchase them here.
You can read more about the lions here.

You can see more videos about the Library on their YouTube page here.

Both the header photo and the photo at the top of this post are in the public domain.

  1. When I went to NYC, I loved it when I visited the library. It's beautiful inside! But these lions certainly caught my attention as well.

Happy 100th birthday to them! And thanks for letting me know about their names – never knew that!
