I Have A Dream!

Today we observe Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in the United States. For students of beautiful speeches and the true power of words, just listen to King’s famous “I Have A Dream” speech. It’s magnificent!

It’s one of the most important speeches of the 20th century, along with President Franklin Delano Roosevelt‘s “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” It had the power of President Abraham Lincoln‘s “Gettysburg Address“, which King pays tribute to when he says “five score years ago”. King also makes references to the Bible and to Shakespeare.

I remember in the fifth grade (when I was 10 years old) everyone in my class had to memorize “The Gettysburg Address” and recite it from memory in front of the class. I found out that I was good at memorizing and started to read other speeches and was profoundly moved by King’s speech. He had died years before, and I felt so bad. But the beauty and the power of the words will stay with me forever.
